What can I do to keep prices down?

What can professors do?

  • Readopt the same textbook for the life of the edition.
  • Use library and digital resources.
  • Customize a reader with publishing companies.
  • Only order materials that will be used for the class; if ordering a bundle utilize all components.
  • Be sensitive to the pricing- call the bookstore for a quote of the book's retail price.
  • Meet bookstore timelines for textbook requisitions.
  • Encourage publishers to sell bundle components separately.

Bookstore strategies to fight high textbook costs:

  • Provide aggressive buyback campaigns.
  • Cultivate relationships with used book companies.
  • Discuss textbook bundling with professors and suggest they only order what they will use.
  • Suggest to faculty to readopt the same textbooks for the life of the edition.
  • Research the price of the textbooks for faculty and quote the retail price.
  • Produce a cost-benefit analysis after each semester to determine sell-through and usage.
  • Contact new faculty through orientation to explain textbook acquisition process.
  • Meet with the faculty senate, faculty executive board, and the student executive boards to come up with best practices and insight to this issue.
  • Communicate through a faculty web page and offers textbook information. .
  • Make presentations to faculty and the administration on the high cost of textbooks and the textbook process.
